Exciting Opportunity for Fundraising Expert Trustee

#techmums was founded in 2012 by Dr Sue Black OBE, a leading advocate for the inclusion of under-represented groups in the world of technology. Sue saw that mums on the wrong side of the digital divide are less likely to have opportunities in education, employment and entrepreneurship – and this limits both them and their families. So, she set up #techmums to help mums feel more positive and excited about technology.

Through in-person workshops and innovative use of social media, #techmums has made significant progress on its goal to impact a million mums by 2020, and continues to gain momentum. #techmums employs two part-time staff, with plans to hire more soon, and has a committed network of volunteers.

Challenges and opportunities abound, and #techmums needs a new trustee with expertise in fundraising, to help make the most of these. This individual will partner with four other trustees in ensuring the organisation is run well.

Opportunity

A key focus for #techmums is to build a sustainable revenue stream to help the organization reach its goals. While we have had some success, we need a trustee with deep experience of this area who can develop and oversee the delivery of a fundraising strategy.

Success in this role is crucial to #techmums long-term, so we are seeking someone who can bring the strategic perspective and the operational insight to help us deliver it as effectively as possible, as quickly as possible. Initially, this will likely be quite hands-on, with a focus on corporates, foundations and possibly high net-worth individuals. As fundraising builds momentum and we hire full-time staff to do this, we would expect this trustee to broaden their focus to other strategic issues.

We expect time commitment to run at around 2-5 hours per week. This includes a monthly meeting of trustees, and a quarterly in-person half-day meeting in London. The position is unpaid; travel and other expenses will be covered. The appointment would initially be for a two year term, which can be renewed.

Responsibilities

  • As part of the board of trustees, ensure #techmums delivers on its mission and strategy, manages its finances appropriately, and adheres to legal requirements
  • Work with trustees and employees to design a fundraising strategy, and oversee its launch / execution
  • Identify and prioritise appropriate sources of funding; advise how to make the most of those
  • Help craft messaging, pitches, and communications; help write applications, participate in meetings
  • Ensure #techmums builds its organisational capability in this area

Experiences and other

  • Designed and delivered fundraising strategy for UK-based not-for-profit
  • Has run, or helped run, an organization that depends on partnerships for its success
  • Passion for using technology to make the world better
  • Could be based anywhere in UK; able to quarterly trustee meetings in London
  • #techmums loves diversity in all its forms <3
