The Smallpeice Trust is an energetic and independent educational charity which promotes Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to 10 to 18 year olds with the aim of opening up more career opportunities for young people, securing the future technology talent pipeline in the UK, and helping to rebalance our economy. Founded in 1966 by Dr Cosby Smallpeice, a self-taught engineer, The Smallpeice Trust has a reputation for delivering professionally executed engineering courses.

In the academic year 2014/15, the Smallpeice Trust will have delivered over 400 design and make STEM days in schools in partnership with funders and schools.

Main Purpose of the Role:

To develop and implement fundraising activities, focussing in particular on trusts, foundations and statutory sources and assisting with corporate fundraising.

Head of Business Development

Contract Type: 

Full-time permanent Contract with competitive salary and generous benefits including Pension, Life Assurance, and Private Healthcare.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • To identify and research potential sources of funding from trusts, foundations, government and other funders as appropriate.
  • To carry out fundraising campaigns and activities, as agreed with the Head of Business Development.
  • To develop and prepare compelling written materials, cases for support and proposals for trusts, foundations, government prospects and other funders as appropriate.
  • To assist with corporate and institutional fundraising as and when required.
  • To maintain and develop existing relationships with funders in order to secure their continued funding in the future.
  • To attend key meetings with funders, as appropriate.
  • To keep up-to-date with relevant developments in the sector.
  • To keep comprehensive central records of all applications submitted, correspondence and other relevant documentation.
  • To track and analyse giving practices to identify trends which could affect the success of applications.
  • To discuss with the Head of Operations the feasibility of bids and projects before compilation.
  • To liaise with the Management Team and project staff to plan projects requiring funding; set potential outcomes and outputs; prepare financial budgets.
  • To work collectively with members of the Management Team to ensure that all trust and foundation prospects are thanked and stewarded in a timely and professional manner.
  • To review and report on successes and failures of applications and implement necessary changes.
  • To collate project information and ensure that high quality funding applications are fully considered by donors and the final outcome monitored.
  • Adhere to financial and general processes.
  • To assist with ad hoc projects, and professionally represent the Trust at external events as requested.
  • To attend departmental meetings.
  • To assist with the development of the Business Development Strategy.
  • To support the Head of Business Development with other fundraising activity, as appropriate and to carry out any other duties as may reasonably be required.
  • Maintain the requirements of the Quality System and if aware of any deficiencies, either correct the matter or refer to the Quality Representative.

Person Specification

  • An excellent command of written English is essential as well as the ability to write persuasive, compelling cases for support.
  • Ability to prioritise and plan own workload and complete tasks to the agreed quality and within time parameters.
  • Exceptional organisational and administrative skills, attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Mature and conscientious attitude to work.
  • Excellent IT skills and competency in MS Office.
  • Willingness and ability to be flexible with a demanding work schedule and competing deadlines.
  • Ability to use one’s own initiative and to be self–motivating in order to achieve results.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
  • Proven history of raising funds through fundraising.
  • An interest in STEM is desirable.
