The Sumatran Orangutan Society (SOS) is a small charity with a big impact and is about to embark on the next phase of its development. To support this, we are keen to appoint an exceptional Development Director who has the experience, drive and vision to grow our income to enable SOS to continue to support and expand its portfolio of frontline conservation programmes in Sumatra and campaigns in the UK and internationally. 

Job Title: Development Director
Salary: £30-35,000 FTE dependent on experience, plus 5% pension contribution.
Terms: Full-time or part-time (four days a week).
Location: Abingdon, near Oxford, UK, with the potential for home working with agreed weekly attendance in the Abingdon office for the right candidate.

We are looking for an experienced, confident, creative and strategic fundraiser to maximise our income, and communicate our mission and impact. You will build our supporter base of individual donors, including by motivating supporters to fundraise for SOS, and work with the Director to develop and grow SOS’s corporate and grant fundraising.

As SOS’s sole fundraiser, the Development Director will be responsible for leading and delivering our fundraising strategy, and growing income year on year, while meeting an annually agreed fundraising target. You will contribute to the creation of a new SOS website and ensure it fully supports our ability to engage donors and generate income.

This is a new senior role within the organisation, and offers an exciting opportunity to make a significant difference to a small charity with big ambitions.

The ideal candidate will:

  • have at least five years’ fundraising experience, including of donor acquisition and retention, and legacy fundraising, and experience of at least one of major donor fundraising and corporate fundraising;
  • have a proven track record of achieving annual income targets and growing income;
  • be target driven and with the creativity to identify opportunities and to focus activity to maximise success;
  • be a strong communicator, able to produce a compelling case for support;
  • be experienced in using digital channels to engage and recruit donors and run integrated fundraising campaigns;
  • combine strategic thinking with hands-on delivery;
  • be able to engage and develop interest in SOS, and successfully build strong relationships with supporters; and
  • have a demonstrable interest in nature conservation.
