Cumberland Lodge is an educational foundation with the vision of more peaceful, tolerant and inclusive societies, supported by commercial venue hire for conferences, meetings and special events. It seeks to appoint an experienced Development Director to lead and implement a fundraising strategy recently initiated by the Board of Trustees. This is a new post, created as part of a broader strategic plan to increase the impact of the Lodge in tackling social divisions by equipping and inspiring people to engage in constructive dialogue.

The fundraising strategy, which will be launched in 2017 (the 70th anniversary of the charity’s foundation), involves increasing income from expendable grants and donations, and, within 10 years, building an endowment fund of £7.4 million. As well as implementing this strategy (which is focused on educational activities), the Development Director will also be required to raise funds for capital projects related to the historic Grade II listed building.

The Development Director will work in tandem with a part-time Fundraising Consultant who, for many years, has successfully raised funds, particularly through an annual ‘Chairman’s Appeal’ which continues to generate a steady income. The Development Director will also work alongside the recently appointed Friends, Alumni and Outreach Officer, who runs the Friends of Cumberland Lodge (set up in 2014) and provides a small source of income for charitable activities.

The Development Director will focus on raising further funds from new sources (particularly trusts, foundations and the corporate sector), establishing a legacy scheme, and taking the lead on donor cultivation. The Development Director will be supported administratively by the Principal’s Executive Assistant, whose role includes researching and preparing funding applications.

This is a part-time post, equivalent to two days a week, with the possibility of flexible working hours and of working partly from home.

Person Specification

We are seeking an experienced fundraiser with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, who is a team player and in sympathy with the ethos of the charity and our main stakeholders. The person appointed will have a strong track record of income generation from major donors, and a good working knowledge of trusts and foundations that might support the development of our educational work and capital projects within a historic building.

  • The closing date for applications is 15 December 2016.
  • Initial interviews will take place on 9 January 2017, with second interviews to be held w/c 23 January 2017.
