Background

Smile Train is an international children’s charity with a sustainable approach to a single, solvable problem: cleft lip and palate. Millions of children in developing countries with untreated clefts live in shame, but more importantly, have difficulty eating, breathing and speaking. Cleft repair surgery is simple, and the transformation is immediate. Our sustainable model provides training and funding to empower local doctors in 85+ developing countries to provide 100%-free cleft repair surgery in their communities. Smile Train also provides comprehensive care; such as speech therapy, nutrition and dental care for the cleft patients.

Smile Train, Inc. is headquartered in New York City with program and fundraising staff in North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Since its founding in 1999, Smile Train has provided over one million free cleft surgeries for children in the developing world.  Smile Train UK is a little over 10 years old and has been largest fundraising program outside of North America and is looking to continue the growth to help even more children with cleft. It’s estimated that 170,000 children in the developing world are born with cleft a year, there is so much more we can and will do. Together, we change the world one smile at a time.
