Job Description

Introduction to our cause and work

Deaths and injuries in road crashes, and the extensive pollution caused by road traffic, are urgent, global catastrophes that must be stopped. In the UK, an average of five people die in road crashes every day, with ten times as many seriously injured. Globally, 1.3 million people die every year on roads, with most deaths in low and middle-income nations. Tackling the carnage on our roads is a top priority for the United Nations in its Sustainable Development Goals.

The solutions are within our grasp. Brake is a leading NGO that is highly respected both in the UK and globally, fighting for a world with safe and green road transport, and supporting road crash victims. Every death or serious injury is one too many, and they can all be prevented. Every death or serious injury devastates families, who must be cared for.

Brake employs a dedicated team of professionals to campaign for action and to care for the victims of road crashes. Our victim services team provide an accredited national helpline and information service for adults and children bereaved and seriously injured in road crashes. Our community engagement team works alongside schools, children and youth to shout out in their communities. Our fleet engagement team works to promote companies operating fleets of vehicles in ways that are safe and sustainable. Our campaigns team advocates for change at government level and by shouting out in the media. Most of our work is currently UK focussed, but we have a growing global presence and a branch in New Zealand too.

We work from our head office in Yorkshire, smaller locations in London and New Zealand.


Overall objective of the job

Working directly with, and reporting to, the fundraising and development director, you will work as part of  Brake’s corporate fundraising team; a team of six who collectively generate over half of the charity's income. The  team jointly manages over 100 relationships with organisations, from a diverse range of sectors, all committed to supporting Brake’s cause and integrating road safety and sustainability into their businesses.

You will  be responsible for developing and managing an exciting and diverse portfolio of corporate accounts. You will have proven experience in creating, developing and overseeing successful partnerships and possess the ability to devise and deliver bespoke and engaging fundraising plans. You will be motivated by reaching targets and pitching for significant donations to help Brake grow and achieve its charitable objectives.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Secure and account manage a portfolio of corporate partners and supporters, cultivate them for additional support and bigger opportunities, including renewing annual donations, and regular liaison and support on partnership activities through phone, email and meetings.
  • Researching and identifying potential corporate funders and securing new long-term support from the corporate sector.
  • Hit personal and team targets set on an annual basis, contributing to the team’s overall success.
  • Securing project and resource sponsors. Includes securing funds for five-figure project sponsorships through to smaller income streams such as corporate partners.
  • Writing new, and adapting existing, funding proposals for corporate supporters, ensuring they are tailored to the audience and presenting Brake in a professional and appealing manner.
  • Writing and delivering funding pitches to potential corporate supporters.
  • Play a pro-active part in the fundraising department and build mutually supportive relationships across all fundraising, professional engagement, campaigns and policy teams. Acting as an ambassador for corporate fundraising, recognise and maximise all opportunities, internal and external.
  • Performing additional duties as required.

Person specification:

You will be an experienced, senior professional with a track record of achievement. You will demonstrate:

  • The ability to think strategically and manage a large and complex workload
  • A proven ability to present and ‘sell’ to new and existing supporters, and internal audiences
  • Excellent presentation and written communication skills
  • Excellent oral communication skills with a high degree of diplomacy, tact and confidence
  • Being an excellent team player who can work on your own initiative to plan and manage your workload, and work independently
  • Ability to develop strong senior relationships both internally and externally
  • A deep understanding of corporate fundraising.

Experience and other requirements:

The successful candidate will demonstrate the following experience/requirements:

  • A proven, impressive track record of delivering corporate/charity partnerships
  • Experience of meeting and exceeding targets
  • High level sales experience in a client-facing environment
  • Educated to degree level or relevant fundraising qualification
  • Willingness to engage with Brake’s cause and develop an understanding of all aspects of our charitable services
  • Flexible and willing to travel throughout the UK, with occasional overnight stays
  • Empathy with road crash victims
  • Knowledge of other fundraising streams, for example major donor giving, GAYE and grant giving beneficial but not essential
  • Home working from the South East or London acceptable with occasional travel to Brake’s office in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire

The successful candidate will be provided with full support, including external training, operating procedures, supportive management and the opportunity to attend Brake’s conferences and seminars on a range of topics.

Salary: £30,000 - £35,000 + employer pension contribution + performance-based bonus (approx. £7,500 per annum)
