Policy and Programme Manager - Criminal Justice (2 Year FTC)
London, SW8

About Us

The National Literacy Trust is a national charity dedicated to raising literacy levels in the UK. We run projects in the poorest communities, campaign to make literacy a priority for politicians and parents, and support schools. Our mission is to give young people the literacy skills they need to get a job and lead a successful life.

One person in six in the UK has poor literacy skills that impact on every area of their life. A child without good reading, writing and communication skills can’t succeed at school, and as an adult they could be locked out of the job market. Poverty doubles the likelihood of literacy failure by the age of five.

We’ve developed a flagship programme aimed at increasing literacy within prisons, and currently, this service is being delivered in approximately 60 prisons throughout the UK.

Now we’re looking for a Policy and Programme Manager to join us on a two year fixed-term contract, working full or part time, to expand the programme to YOIs (Young Offender Institutions) and lead our work in the criminal justice sector.

The Benefits

- Salary of £40,000 per annum (pro rata for part time)
- Pension scheme
- Flexibility regarding working hours
- Consolidate your skill-set with an ambitious organisation
- 28 days’ holiday (pro rata for part time) plus Bank Holidays and a Christmas closure

This is a fantastic opportunity to help develop our strategic vision for improving literacy skills among some of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable young people and adults.

You will have the chance to build relationships within the civil society and justice sectors, including with local and national government, the media and funders.

The Role

As the Policy and Programme Manager, you will lead our strategic planning, programme development and policy work in the criminal justice space.

Joining our Communities Team, you will:

- Develop and deliver sustainable business models
- Represent our charity with key stakeholders in the civil society and justice sectors
- Monitor and analyse developments in criminal justice policy to ensure our work is up-to-date and responding to current requirements
- Work with the Head of Operations, the Fundraising Team and the Director to develop an income strategy and secure funding

About You

To join us as a Policy and Programme Manager, you’ll need:

- Experience in programme management, including financial and risk management within the charity and/or private sector
- Previous experience within, or strong knowledge of, the criminal justice sector
- Excellent communication skills
- A collaborative approach

Other companies may call this role Policy Manager, Programme Manager, Strategic Planning Manager, Criminal Justice Policy Manager, Criminal Justice Programme Manager or Criminal Justice Consultant.

The closing date for applications is 10am on Thursday the 7th March 2019. This role is available on a full time or part time basis, working up to 35 hours per week.

The National Literacy Trust is committed to being an equal opportunities employer and aims to ensure that no job applicant or employee receives less favourable treatment on the grounds of gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, ethnicity or religion.
