Job Profile:

To lead on Community & Events Fundraising at Smile Train with the aim of growing a range of community/challenge events, as well as developing relationships with community based audiences to deliver income and recruit donors. Smile Train community based audiences include Schools, Faith groups, service organisations (Inner Wheel/Rotary) and other community and youth groups.

Currently we have a large number of diverse supporters undertaking a range of community/challenge events from taking part in national sporting events to holding community events such as bake sales. As an identified area of growth potential, this post will oversee and develop future strategies to build on success and deliver significant growth in income and volume.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. To manage and grow a range of Team Empower athletic events for Smile Train including the London Marathon, Ride London 100, Great North Run, Royal Parks Half Marathon and The Big Half. 
  2. To manage and grow the Smile Train community programmes including Raise a cuppa. Raise a smile.
  3. Lead on all community and event fundraising relationships activities.
  4. To meet agreed income and expenditure targets. Monitor activity, evaluate and report against plans.
  5. Lead on the development and cultivation of strategic relationships with key individuals and/or influencers from within community audiences, personally managing these relationships where appropriate.
  6. Responsible for the strategic development of the schools/faith programme across Smile Train UK in order to deliver agreed objectives and maximise potential.
  7. Responsible for the strategic development of plans and budgets for Community & Events fundraising including Tribute and In Memorial fundraising activities.
  8. Work together with The Director of Fundraising and other staff across Smile Train UK and Smile Train US to ensure all events and audiences and products are integrated to achieve maximum benefit to Smile Train.
  9. Build and develop integrated working relationships within Supporter development and wider Smile Train departments to seek opportunities to deepen supporters’ engagement with Smile Train, ensure the events and community fundraising activity is delivered effectively and to ensure coordination.
  10. Work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders across the organisation to develop activities to reach agreed income targets, including but not limited to marketing, media, web and digital.  
  11. Responsible for ensuring events and community fundraising audiences receive an exceptional supporter experience and developing systems, processes and relevant internal working relationships, specifically with Supporter Services to support this.
  12. Represent Smile Train in relevant external forums and networks and maintain relevant sector knowledge and expertise, keeping up to date with current trends.
  13. Ensure all events and community fundraising activities are carried out in accordance with current good practice and within charity law, managing contracts and agreements where appropriate and providing advice to others.

Additional Responsibilities:

  1. To be pro-active in keeping abreast of industry developments and relevant laws. Undertake training as necessary.
  2. To handle queries via the Smile Train Query Log and requests from Smile Trains processing center as requested by the Director of Fundraising.
  3. To support and contribute to the wider objectives of the UK Fundraising Team and to manage other projects as required by the Director of Fundraising.
  4. To liaise with external agencies, as and when required.
  5. To attend and actively contribute to UK Fundraising Team and other meetings which may be held away from the office.
  6. To represent the UK Fundraising Team at meetings with external agencies as appropriate.
  7. To undertake any other activity reasonably requested by the Director of Fundraising.

Person Specification:

  • Educated to degree level or significant equivalent work experience.
  • Substantial proven experience of events and community fundraising, particularly establishing and building relationships with community groups, influential individuals and high value partnerships.
  • Experience leading and managing fundraising events and providing meaningful feedback on performance.
  • Experience of managing volunteers directly and remotely.
  • Experience of managing delivery against annual plans and budgets and monitoring and evaluating activity.
  • Excellent numeracy skills and ability to analyse and report on financial performance and work with complex budgets to make informed decisions on future activity.
  • Ability to recognise and develop new fundraising opportunities and experience of developing fundraising plans, budgets and strategy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of fundraising best practice, legal requirements and health & safety and experience providing advice to groups and/or individuals.
  • Sound knowledge of risk management.
  • Ability to work flexibly and with autonomy, to manage varying competing priorities under own initiative and to meet strict deadlines.
  • ‘Hands on’ experience of managing information on fundraising databases.
  • Willingness to work some unsociable hours when required (evenings and weekends).
     

Desirable:

  • Direct marketing experience.
  • Experience developing regional networks of supporters within the community.
  • Experience of managing relationships with Faith, School and Rotary audiences.
  • Events fundraising experience, including mass participation events.
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering significant growth within a fundraising team and establishing successful new fundraising products and systems.
  • Willingness to travel overseas when required.
