BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The London Music Fund (formerly the Mayor’s Music Fund) is an independent charity with the Mayor of London as Patron.  Established in May 2011, the organisation provides funding to enable aspiring young musicians to fulfil their potential.  It does this by awarding four-year music scholarships to talented children whose families struggle to meet the cost of tuition and by funding a series of large-scale project giving young people the opportunity to learn from and perform alongside professional musicians in iconic venues. The charity works across all 32 London boroughs.

ABOUT THE POST

The London Music Fund is looking to recruit a Development Manager to join our small and dedicated team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone seeking to develop their career and gain experience at the next level. The post is being offered at 3 days a week.

The post holder will work closely with the CEO to develop and implement the charity’s fundraising strategy. 

The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience in a Development Team and of raising income from at least one, but preferably two or more of the following: Trusts and Foundations, Individuals, Corporates, Events. You must have a real interest in helping children and young people to fulfil their potential through music. You will have a track record of planning and achievement, be a confident communicator, have lots of ideas and also be keen to develop your career to the next stage.

KEY TASKS

  • To work alongside the CEO to meet fundraising targets (c. £400k per year) through the following key income streams; individual giving, corporate partnerships (CSR/sponsorship), trusts and foundations, major donors, events;
  • To maintain and develop existing relationships through effective donor management;
  • To maximise relationships and networks by exploring opportunities and identifying new ways in which to strengthen donor engagement;
    To undertake extensive research to identify new sources of income and work with the CEO on the strategy for making approaches.

Specific tasks

Trusts and Foundations

  • With support from the CEO, write applications and proposals, and following up such applications through maintaining a tracking system;
  • Take responsibility for reporting to current trusts and foundations and developing relationships
  • Research new trusts and foundations.

Individual Giving

  • Develop and managing effective relationships with donors: new, existing or lapsed, with the highest standard of care ensuring all benefits are delivered as required;
  • Work with the CEO to build the individual giving database, both major donors and low-level, regular giving
  • Keep up to date with all legislation surrounding GDPR Compliance (data protection)
  • Donor stewardship: reporting annually on all Scholars and working with the CEO and Executive Assistant to compile and circulate the termly magazine, Tempo.

Events

  • Be willing to assist with all aspects of fundraising events; notably generating interest and assisting  in sponsorship, selling tables, compiling programmes,  sourcing auction items and managing volunteers

Corporate

  • Assist the CEO in developing Corporate Partnerships by identifying prospects,  and suggesting ideas for building on existing relationships;
  • Work alongside the CEO to secure sponsorship for events and corporate engagement in team challenges.

General fundraising and administrative tasks

  • Prepare content for the fundraising and events pages of the website
  • Keep abreast of developments within the sector, but also within the music industry and wider society;
  • Identify areas of work that might be appropriate for funding and work with the CEO to source and develop more strategic applications and new initiatives;
  • Carry out administrative work generated by the above activities, including maintaining systems (database and spreadsheets) for effective fundraising;
  • Attend board, subcommittee and other meetings as required;
  • Manage Challenge Events e.g. Ride London and the "Big Half", working with the CEO to advertise places and find participants

Other

  • To work with the GLA press team to raise the profile of the charity in the charitable, education and social sectors through events, press releases any other medium that fits with the strategic plan;
  • To work with the Mayor's office to promote and develop the aims and objectives of the charity;
  • To represent the organisation as requested, maintaining the security and confidential status of all information and conducting activities in a professional manner at all times;
  • To undertake any other duties as may reasonably be required.

Person Specification - Experience

  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience of fundraising or equivalent form of income generation, ideally in a similar sized charity, with similar aims (arts/education/music);
  • Understanding of the variety of funding streams available and track record of generating income from one or two of the following: cause related marketing, corporates, trusts, individuals, events,
  • Experience of budgeting and preparing reports;
  • Proven track record of achieving targets.
  • An understanding of and keen interest in music and music education, particularly for disadvantaged children.

Skills

  • Clear understanding of the music education landscape in England
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to construct and complete compelling funding /sponsorship proposals to engage a variety of audiences;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including strong relationship-building;
  • Proven ability to work within a small team of skilled and committed staff, as well as independently;
  • Strong administrative, project-management and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise workloads;
  • Considerable ability to think strategically and take initiative;
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines;
  • Commitment to the charity’s goals and values;
  • Self-starter, able to drive forward fundraising but equally keen to develop new skills and learn from others.
  • Knowledge of Salesforce (desirable but not essential).

Salary  £42-45,000 pro rata, 3 days a week (depending on experience)
