Over the last 5 years the Trust has successfully diversified its income, moving from one principal funder – the Trust’s chairman and founder, Sir Peter Lampl –to nearly 120 donors, including individuals, corporates, trusts and foundations. In this time it has secured over £35million in pledges and commitments.

The Development Manager, who will report to the Director of Development, will have the opportunity to help shape the Trust’s future by driving high value giving and helping to develop a major giving programme. The Development Manager will identify and engage a pipeline of funders particularly supporting the Trust with individual major donors.

The Trust is a small team of c20 and is looking for a driven, focused and creative-thinking individual to join the growing Development team. Those in Development at the Trust work closely with the Trust’s Chief Executive and Chairman.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Director of Development on the Trust’s major-giving strategy and solicitation plans, particularly for individuals.
  • Help to increase the Trust’s income in line with its new strategic objectives and to reach annual targets
  • Manage the Trust’s portfolio of individual donors – especially Board members and Fellows
  • Support the Director of Development in identifying and soliciting new individual prospects
  • Support the Director of Development in engagement plans for individual donors
  • Support the growth of the Sutton Trust Fellowship
  • Develop fundraising opportunities through the Trust’s new alumni network with the Alumni Manager
  • Manage and develop legacy giving for the Trust
  • Quality assure and manage proposal writing, reporting and briefings
  • Deal effectively, efficiently and appropriately with donors, prospects and other stakeholders; in written correspondence, face to face and over the telephone.
  • Deliver a strong portfolio of fundraising literature
  • Represent the Trust externally
  • Manage Development-related events (such as Board and Fellows’ meetings and small dinners)
  • Line manage a Development Officer and a Development Intern and support the Director of Development

Personal Specification

Essential

  • Degree educated or equivalent
  • 3(+) years’ experience working in Development
  • A strong track record of securing high-level financial commitments
  • A strong track record of delivering income growth
  • A strong track record of soliciting and stewarding high value funders
  • Excellent numeracy skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including networking and relationship building abilities.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication
  • A confident, authoritative and approachable manner
  • Close attention to detail
  • Proven ability to prioritise
  • A creative approach to problem solving
  • A committed team player with ability to work well in a small team
  • Sympathetic to the goals of the Sutton Trust
  • Eligible to work in the UK
