Role and Responsibilities

We are seeking an experienced grants fundraiser to manage and build our relationships with Trusts and Foundations and increase income from this source.  You will be an integral part of this growing, award-winning Christian charity and will make a life-saving difference to the world’s most vulnerable people.

Purpose

To enable Medair’s life-saving work by facilitating growth of Medair’s grant fundraising, particularly from Trusts and Foundations, both current and potential partners.

About you

You will have a proven track record in grants fundraising and relationship management.  A compelling written communicator, you will have an understanding of the humanitarian sector, and of what motivates Trusts and Foundations to support this area of work.

Contract Details

Full-time, permanent

Key Activity Areas

Planning, monitoring and pipeline management

  • Work with Head of Engagement to develop and implement a regularly updated strategic plan for Trusts and Foundations. 
  • Maintain a good record of the application pipeline and regularly update this.
  • Monitor application output and income targets and keep line manager informed on progress against them.

Lead Generation

  • Regularly research and review opportunities for building potential relationships with prospective (new to Medair UK, or lapsed) Trusts and Foundations and progressing with applications to them. 
  • Work with existing networks and contacts to identify and approach potential (new to Medair UK, or lapsed) Trusts and Foundations and develop relationships with key decision makers there.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to increase income from existing Trust and Foundation relationships.

Grant applications

  • Submit an agreed number of high quality applications per quarter.
  • Raise an agreed level of income each year.
  • Write compelling cases for support and proposals in order to secure grants.

Grant reporting and stewardship

  • Ensure timely delivery of grant thank you letters / receipts to funders.
  • Ensure timely delivery of grant progress reports and updates to funders.

Account Management

  • Be primarily responsible for account management of small and medium Trusts, supporting Head of Engagement and Director with large Trusts.
  • Ensure that details of grants and funders are recorded accurately on the relevant databases.
  • Be the first point of contact for funders to arrange potential project site visits

Internal Liaison

  • Liaise with Medair’s Heads of Country Programmes and Communications Officers in order to gather information and data for the purposes of applying and reporting to funders.

Support for other proposal writing

  • Support the Head of Engagement / Director with proposal writing for other categories of funders: Statutory and Major Donors.

Tasks common to all staff

  • Act as an ambassador for Medair UK at all times when liaising externally and internally.
  • Ensure consistent implementation of the Medair brand across all relevant activities.
  • Record information as necessary and comply at all times with requirements for handling personal / sensitive data.

Qualifications

  • Relevant degree, or equivalent experience in a fundraising role within the charity sector, preferably in an international relief / development organisation
  • Professional fundraising qualification desirable

Languages

  • Strong working knowledge of English (spoken and written)

Experience / Competencies – ESSENTIAL:

  • Inspired by and in full agreement with Medair’s Christian values and ethos
  • A proven track record in generating grant income from Trusts and Foundations
  • Experience of building and maintaining good relationships with funders
  • Understanding and experience using fundraising database(s)
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Understanding of humanitarian issues
  • The ability to build and maintain effective and collaborative relationships internally
  • Willing to contribute to the spiritual life of the team including prayer meetings

Experience / Competencies – DESIRABLE:

  • Direct experience in relief / development work
  • Experience of Statutory and / or Major Donor fundraising

Working Conditions

  • This is a position based in Kennington, SW London with possible UK and international travel.
  • Willingness to be flexible in terms of hours worked at occasional, but inevitable moments of crisis and opportunity particularly evening and weekends.
