The Florence Nightingale Foundation:

Florence Nightingale is the world’s most iconic heroine of professional nursing. Following her death in 1910 The International Council of Nurses proposed a Foundation should be set up in her memory to provide educational support for aspiring nurse and midwifery leaders. In 1929 that vision became a reality and the Florence Nightingale Foundation was created. Now more than ever the Foundation is committed to continue her legacy.

Like Florence, patient care drives us, the object of the charity is to maintain and advance Florence’s legacy - we are dedicated to the continual advancement of the art of nursing and midwifery. Today, The Florence Nightingale Foundation remains a leading advocate of advances in nursing and midwifery practice and research promoting excellence and innovation to benefit patients. Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra, The Honourable Lady Ogilvy is the Royal Patron.

The Florence Nightingale Foundation, a registered UK charity, has a national reputation for awarding one-year leadership, research and travel scholarships to nurses and midwives in the UK that directly must improve patient care and health outcomes. Under continual pressure from reductions in the available professional development opportunities, nurses and midwives are more than ever reliant on the Foundation to provide opportunities that will impact on improved patient and health outcomes.

The increasing attrition rates in nursing and midwifery is of serious national concern and at an all-time high. Many of our scholar’s report that, prior to the scholarship opportunity, they were considering leaving their profession. Since completion of their scholarship they now report greater levels of resilience and are thus choosing to stay in the profession. Our evidence shows that, not only do our scholars remain in healthcare careers, but 80% have been promoted within two years.

All of our scholars report profound life changing experiences, both personally and professionally, that occur during and after their scholarship year. They have greater self-awareness, political and emotional intelligence, enabling more effective and constructive working with others.

The Florence Nightingale Foundation is about to embark on an ambitious strategic journey, building on its heritage and outstanding reputation in the health sector. The Foundation recognises the need to expand its work in the coming years to support talented nurses and midwives throughout their career pathway as the sector faces up to significant new challenges.

In order to achieve our goals, we will have to grow the organisation and our support base dramatically in the coming years.

We have, over many years, benefitted from the very generous donations from a number of grant awarding charities to provide scholarships, but this income is predominately ‘restricted’ and that therefore limits flexibility in its use.

In April 2018 the Board of Trustees approved a new five-year strategy with ambitions to reach further across the career pathway from potential nurses and midwives through to newly appointed Directors of Nursing and Midwifery. The Board recognised the need for enhanced measures of success, improved financial asks from a broader range of donors and improved ways of working with our Alumni to support greater numbers of beneficiaries. In order to deliver this inspirational future we are in the process of building a fundraising function.
