Could you inspire major donors to support the John Muir Trust’s vision of a world where wild places are respected, where nature flourishes, and where the value of wildness is shared for the benefit of everyone?  An exciting opportunity has arisen to join and complete the Trust’s Fundraising team.  We are seeking a dynamic individual to take responsibility for growing income from new and existing major donors.

This permanent role will involve research, proposal writing, cultivation and stewardship and reporting.  The right candidate will have initiative, drive, and outstanding relationship building and communication skills.  Comfortable dealing with high net worth individuals and with a track record of income generation, you will work as part of a team to achieve ambitious fundraising targets.

An affinity for the Trust’s work is a must, as is the ability to quickly connect with and influence people.  Experience in a similar third sector role would be an advantage, but is not a prerequisite.  The chosen candidate will have the opportunity to play a key role in ensuring the success of the Trust’s fundraising strategy and making a positive difference for wild places.  With flexibility in location for the right candidate – the Trust has offices in both Edinburgh and Pitlochry – the role is advertised as full-time, but a part-time position (minimum three days per week FTE) may be considered dependent on experience and skillset.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Grow the Trust’s  portfolio of major donors and prospects to secure both core and project income
  • Build on relationships with existing key donors to maximise income and meet ambitious targets
  • Meet with potential donors across the UK as appropriate, making tailored asks in order to optimise return
  • Manage John Muir Trust Partners scheme, the Trust’s donor club
  • Plan and manage major donor events, such as dinners and receptions, for prospects and donors
  • Develop funding bids, working with a range of colleagues to submit compelling proposals to individuals and other funders, ensuring approaches match their interests and priorities
  • Write reports and updates to keep donors informed of the positive impact of their support
  • Liaise with colleagues across the organisation to ensure that fundraising reflects the charity’s strategic priorities
  • Work with the Head of Fundraising and wider team to assist with other aspects of fundraising as required

Skills, Experience and Attributes:

  • A proven track record of successful relationship building and income generation (revenue not capital), whether in a charitable or commercial context
  • Strong experience of researching, identifying and developing individual contacts to gain introductions
  • Desire to meet ambitious targets and ability to work flexibly towards those targets
  • A confident communicator and influencer, able to turn complex project information into persuasive fundraising content for audiences including high net worth individuals
  • Experience of working with senior staff, trustees, and volunteers to support prospect development and funding applications
  • Commitment to, understanding and sensitive communication of the John Muir Trust’s work and values
  • Ability to use own initiative, plan and manage own workload
  • Understanding and experience of the charitable and environmental sectors would be an advantage
  • Knowledge of GDPR, data protection requirements and/or ThankQ database would also be an advantage
  • Full and clean driving license with access to own car
