Head of Development

University of Sussex

Brighton

Competitive salary and benefits

Full-time, permanent role

The University of Sussex is one of UK’s most respected modern universities.  Following the successful conclusion of its first major fundraising campaign in 2016, the Development and Alumni Relations Office (DARO), part of the External Relations division, has continued to build momentum and support for the institution, through engaging alumni and friends of the University both at home and across the globe.

This new Head of Development role was created to help build further fundraising capacity as the University launched a new strategic framework, Sussex 2025. A Better University for a Better World.  Reporting to the Director of Development and Alumni Relations, the Head of Development will lead a high-performing team of five staff working across leadership and major gifts, trusts and foundations, and research, as well as actively manage a portfolio of individual prospects to secure gifts for key institutional priorities.  Working alongside senior members of the department and the wider External Relations division, the post holder will contribute to the planning and implementation of fundraising and stewardship strategies to grow philanthropic income to the University, and ensure donors feel valued and continue to give over time.

You are a powerful influencer and enjoy using your sophisticated communication skills to operate at this strategic level.  Your demonstrable track record of leading high-performing fundraising teams, and experience of securing philanthropic support at the six-figure level and more, will underpin your success in this role.  Your pragmatism, resilience, and ability to spot and nurture opportunities and show good judgement, will enable you to build on the successes of the DARO team to date, and take them to the next stage of their evolution.

If you value the impact that philanthropy has in higher education and are ready to take on this challenging and rewarding role, we’d love to hear from you.  For further information on this exceptional opportunity, please contact our recruitment partners at Richmond Associates on +44 (0)20 3617 9240.
