Direct Marketing Manager (Maternity Cover)

The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund is the leading welfare charity supporting
current and former members of the RAF, their partners and families, providing practical, emotional and financial support, whenever they need us. 

This is a key position in the RAF Benevolent Fund’s friendly and hardworking fundraising team in London.  It involves raising significant support from individuals from cash and regular gifts.  You will lead on the programme to attract new supporters to the cause and to retain our exiting supporters.  We will also give you opportunity to show your fundraising experience and flair in creating new ways to connect with supporters through a variety of channels from direct mail and telephone to TV and digital. 

You will have proven success in a busy direct marketing environment, experience of providing excellent supporter care as well as managing a member of staff.  You will have strong communication and problem-solving skills and enthusiasm for the work of the RAF Benevolent Fund.

1.  MAIN SUMMARY OF ROLE:

Support from individuals through the direct marketing programme is a significant source of income and the programme has been instrumental in identifying legacy pledgers and supporters for other areas of the RAF Benevolent Fund’s work.  The person in this role has responsibility for organising all aspects of the direct marketing programme and managing the Fundraising Executive.

2.  KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Set income and expenditure budgets for supporter recruitment and development in line with the Fundraising Strategy and annual Business Plan.
  • Manage the Fundraising Executive and ensure he or she meets annual objectives.
  • To maintain, monitor, review and develop relationships with external agencies and suppliers.  Ensure they meet the agreed Service Level Agreement.
  • Brief and provide information to the Direct Marketing agency for each Direct Marketing activity.
  • Monitor the income and expenditure of each activity against the agreed targets
  • Regularly review the mix of Direct Marketing activities to ensure maximum reach and targets are met.
  • Working with Finance Team colleagues ensure one-off and regular donations processed by the fulfilment house are added to the database.
  • Make selections from the database for mailings and produce suppression files for cold direct mail.
  • Liaise with other members of staff to ensure the needs of the organisation are met through the Direct Marketing programme in terms of promoting appropriate activities/events and raising money for particular areas of work.
  • Ensure head office and regional colleagues are kept up to date with current Direct Marketing activity
  • Ensure revenue from gift aid is maximised.
  • Produce reports on KPI’s for the Head of Individual Giving when required.
  • Manage the Direct Marketing budget to ensure we receive good value from suppliers and projects are met within the pre-agreed expenditure.

  • To attend meetings, conferences and training events as agreed with you line manager.

4.  Academic/Professional Qualification(s) or equivalent:

Essential

  • Degree level education or equivalent vocational qualifications/experience

Desirable

  • Membership of the Institute of Fundraising

5.  Knowledge/ Experience:

Essential

  • Minimum 2 years experience of direct marketing
  • Proven experience of supporter care
  • Proven experience of using a computerised data for fundraising

Desirable

  • Experience of on-line supporter recruitment and development
  • Experience of using the CARE Database
