Title: Head of Fundraising

Reports to: Director General / CEO

Salary: £45,000 - £45,000 depending upon experience

Based at: 74 St Annes Road, Woolston, Southampton, SO19 9FF

Hours of work: Full-time [37.5 hours per week]

Job Purpose

  • To develop and implement fundraising plans (for Corporate Partnerships and Events as a top priority) to achieve voluntary and statutory income goals in support of Sailors’ Society mission.

  • To develop new and innovative areas of income, in line with the charity’s digital vision, through fundraising and commercial opportunities

  • To grow income through creative fundraising product development and exemplary donor relations management.

  • To manage the fundraising team which comprises of Corporate Partnerships and Events as a top priority

  • To develop and implement strategies for Community fundraising.

  • To provide management and accountability to staff with responsibilities for fundraising. This includes the performance management within organisational systems, policies and strategic direction.

  • Have international oversight of the ambassador groups across all regions

  • Work with teams in partnership outside of the development department, particularly in Media & Advocacy and Programme, to ensure effective communication, coordination and help drive income across multiple channels to support program.

Profile and Scope

Sailors’ Society is looking for an enthusiastic, professional, full-time Head of Fundraising with a wide-portfolio of operational and in depth corporate fundraising experience. The preferred candidate will have:

  • Line management and team development experience with a proven ability to lead a multi-disciplinary fundraising team

  • Budget management skills to deliver net income and ROI

  • Proven knowledge and strong experience and expertise of fundraising across Corporate Partnerships/CSR, and Events as a top priority.

  • Good understanding of community fundraising.

  • Experience of securing event sponsorship from corporate partners

  • Experience of recruiting participants and volunteers for events

  • Experienced in building relationships, both internally and externally

  • Considerable experience and track record of successful fundraising products across traditional and digital & social media

  • Highly developed competence in working cross-functionally to ensure all Sailor’s Society audiences receive the best service and impression at every touch point

  • Great attention to detail and ability to work under pressure

Reporting Relationships and Organisational Fit

The Head of Fundraising will report directly to the Director General/CEO who is accountable for the Society’s Development income. The Head of Fundraising is expected to take a lead in implementing, improving and delivering the international fundraising strategy working with multiple direct line reports.

This role is a critical to developing the Society’s international fundraising reach and you will form an important part of the Society’s management team in turning vision in to reality. 

Location

The post is located in Sailors’ Society Southampton offices and the Head of Development is expected to live in working week commuting distance.

The post holder will also be expected to undertake national and international travel, as well as occasionally work during weekends and outside core business working hours, where necessary, and undertake tasks as required

Key Responsibilities:

Strategy Development, Budgets & Planning & Key Processes

  • Work closely with the Director General / CEO to build and develop the overall international fundraising strategy, realistic annual budgets and reforecasts to ensure its successful implementation and its performance monitoring to ensure alignment into the organisational planning process

  • To meet income and expenditure targets and closely track the income and expenditure of the team

  • Variance report on actual figures against budget on a monthly basis with narration to be used for team updates and management committees and board meetings.

  • Work with multiple teams from across the organisation to consider income generation through their activities and facilitate/encourage across team working

  • Ensure all income streams are supported with robust and efficient documented end to end processes, operational plans, ambassadorial support, income targets and performance measures.

  • Lead process improvement initiatives and ensure short term corrective actions and longer term improvements are managed timely.

People Management

  • Provide team leadership and management support for the Corporate and Events team and act as a professional role model.

  • Take an active role in supporting the team on participant and sponsorship recruitment through multiple media (phone, online, social media)

  • Develop and maintain a high performing team engaged in fundraising

  • Support the team in delivering income and expenditure targets

  • Ensure the team follow policies and procedures

  • Undertake performance management in line with our policies

  • Manage team meetings, one to one meetings and ensure constructive feedback is provided to team members on a regular basis

  • Ensure personal objectives are set and monitored and staff appraisals are managed in a timely manner

  • Encourage learning and professional development among reports and ensure appropriate training is provided where required to enable personal growth and productivity and talent management.

Corporate & Events Fundraising Management

  • Ensure all fundraising activities are fully budgeted and planned

  • Undertake tenders for suppliers where needed

  • Oversee fundraising activity planning timelines and manage the teams deadlines

  • To improve existing processes for Corporate Partnerships/CSR, Events & Community.

  • Oversee the research and advertisement of fundraising activities to enable people to take part and fundraise on our behalf with little support from us

  • Manage sign off on fundraising materials to be on budget and to a high standard

  • Oversee the development of risk registers for fundraising activities, minimising risk to the organisation and staff.

  • Work with a range of internal teams or external agencies to develop and deliver marketing and PR for fundraising activities.

  • Research relevant projects and gather collateral for marketing materials

  • Maximise the use of the database for management of the fundraising activities

  • Oversee the fundraising activities evaluations and ensure lessons learnt are captured and applied for future activities.

  • Ensure an excellent supporter journey for our event participants to include recognition and development of their support

  • Ensure consistency and strength of the case for support and donor value propositions across the full range of donor touch points

  • Collaborate with Program and Media & Advocacy to develop best communications content to build into campaigns and programs

Relationship Building

  • Work with our networks of Ambassadors and volunteers to deliver fundraising activities on our behalf

  • Act as a key contact with external agencies ensuring high quality, accurate delivery of fundraising activities and marketing materials on time and budget

  • Establish and maintain close day to day working relationships with internal departments to ensure the effective delivery of all areas of your responsibility

  • Build relationships with key individuals and organisations internationally, with a particular emphasis upon supporting the Director General / CEO to begin fundraising in new territories, for example (including but not exclusively) India, North America and China.

Compliance

  • Ensure that we comply with relevant charity legislation and best practice as it applies to your areas of fundraising.

Person Specification (minimum requirement)

You are likely to have developed your portfolio of fundraising skills over time in a national or international charity and can demonstrate considerable experience in individual, mass-market giving. You will have had several years of line-management experience in more than one area of fundraising and are looking for more managerial responsibility. As a graduate, you will have taken opportunities to improve your professional competence.
