Applications are invited for a highly motivated individual to provide maternity cover for the post of Development Manager (Individual Giving) in our fundraising team.

This is an exciting time to work at The London Library.  Having celebrated our 175th Anniversary in 2016, we are now looking towards the future. We are exploring how best to continue the Library’s great tradition of supporting reading and writing whilst celebrating the organisation’s remarkable history. Innovative plans will range from devising new channels of content and creating outreach programmes through to reshaping parts of the building. However, this programme will only be possible if we can achieve a strengthened annual revenue programme to ensure a solid foundation upon which to build. A new fundraising strategy has recently been developed to support the Library’s plans and deliver a sustained increase in fundraising income over the next five years.

This position is ideal for an ambitious and experienced individual who is looking for an opportunity to take the lead in recruiting, retaining and managing individual supporters, as well as play a vital role in supporting all fundraising activity. 

Applicants must be able to demonstrate excellent relationship-building and research skills, a keen commitment to effective working practices, and a creative and analytical mind.

Key duties

  • Curating and developing our patrons group, the Founders’ Circle, and new high level and non-member giving circles
  • Managing and growing our legacy programme
  • Excellent supporter engagement and stewardship, and prospects research and cultivation
  • Developing communications to support individual and legacy giving
  • Working closely with the Finance, Membership and other Departments to ensure smooth management of administration of all fundraising activity
  • Contributing to and assisting with the implementation of the Fundraising Strategy, ensuring delivery of fundraising targets

The London Library is one of the most important literary organisations in the country.  Housed in its historic building, in the beautiful St James’s Square, is a collection of over one million books and periodicals that form the largest independent lending library in the world.  Founded in 1841, past members have ranged from Charles Dickens to Winston Churchill, Charles Darwin to Virginia Woolf and amongst its c6,500 members today are leading writers, scholars and researchers.  The Patron of the Library is HM The Queen and its President is Sir Tim Rice.
