The National Literacy Trust is a national charity dedicated to raising literacy levels in the UK. We run projects in the poorest communities, campaign to make literacy a priority for politicians and parents, and support schools. One person in seven in the UK has poor literacy skills that impact on every area of their life. A child without good reading, writing and communication skills can’t succeed at school, and as an adult they could be locked out of the job market. Poverty doubles the likelihood of literacy failure by the age of five. 

We are seeking a Community Project Officer to support our Literacy Champions programme in Nottingham on a part time basis for a two year fixed-term contract. This role is funded through two Big Lottery Fund grants from the National Literacy Trust and Small Steps Big Changes (SSBC).

Your Role 

As a Community Project Officer, you will be tasked with supporting volunteers to become Literacy Champions; engaged people who take action to support literacy outcomes across Nottingham. 

Working within targeted communities, you will identify potential volunteers and volunteering opportunities, and develop strategies for recruiting, training and supporting volunteers. 

This role is hosted by SSBC in Nottingham but employed and line managed by the National Literacy Trust, as part of our Nottingham Hub. The Hub brings together a wide range of partners, including businesses, health, education and cultural organisations, to find local solutions to the challenges of intergenerational low literacy. 

Specifically, your role will involve: 

- Creating processes and resources that support the Literacy Champions programme 
- Supporting the Hub Manager in various projects to raise literacy levels 
- Overseeing a parent and carer steering group that informs our work 
- Achieving a target of 50 recruited volunteers over a 12 month period 
- Supporting background checks for volunteers 
- Acting as the point of contact for the programme 
- Maintaining project plans and budgets 

About You 

To be considered as a Community Project Officer, you will need: 

- Experience of recruiting, training and supporting volunteers 
- Project support experience within a charity or educational context 
- Experience of developing resources and training materials 
- Experience of maintaining project plans and budgets and reporting against them 
- A proven track record of co-ordinating goods and supplies, including placing and tracking orders 

Experience of handling sensitive and/or confidential information would be beneficial to your application. Experience of community mobilisation would also be advantageous.

This is a part time role working 28 hours per week.
