What are now known as the various Wildlife Trusts came out of a meeting in May 1912, held by the famous banker and expert naturalist, Charles Rothschild, to discuss his radical idea about saving places for nature.

Rothschild's vision was to identify and protect the best places for wildlife and helped acquire areas of land -'nature reserves'- where wildlife could be protected. Rothschild went on to be what we would recognise as a major philanthropist when he funded the purchase of Woodwalton Fen in Cambridgeshire. This is where nature reserves started; it’s surprising isn’t it that they haven’t been around for that long – 1912 is a recent point in history comparatively, for something we almost take for granted as having always existed.

The Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire (BCN) is a custodian of this first nature reserve. We work to make our three counties a place where nature can flourish, carrying on the legacy left by such generosity and to enrich the lives of the people who live here. We care for local wildlife and more than 100 nature reserves and we inspire others to do the same.

There’s a great opportunity for an exceptional person to help us to shape a top team, building on what we have already and helping secure the funding needed to continue Rothschild’s vision.
