Why we are here

There are over 55,500 people living with a brain tumour in the UK. 16,000 more people are diagnosed each year. 20-40% of all cancers spread to the brain. Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of the under 35s. The disease is responsible for over 20 years of life lost in the typical patient, making it the most lethal cancer. What causes brain tumours is unknown and incidence is increasing.

Interesting. But we know that these statistics don’t help you on the day you are told ‘you have a brain tumour’.

We know a brain tumour diagnosis is confusing, isolating and overwhelming. We know these problems are exacerbated by not being able to access care and information quickly and easily. And we also know that access to proactive support, and good information can improve knowledge and understanding, reduce anxiety, increase preparedness for events, instil control and improve satisfaction with treatment in brain tumour patients. That’s why we’re here.

This is an exciting opportunity to have real influence. You can make a big impact in a small and stable (but rapidly growing) charity as we carve out a new sector for brain tumour support. In short, you are joining a great team at an exciting time.

Aims of the role

Building upon brainstrust’s established and successful grant fundraising programme, you will be responsible for taking our activity in this area to the next level, as well as ensuring that current funders’ requirements are fully met. You will work as part of the brainstrust leadership team to foster a project and team approach to trust and foundation fundraising, with the result that we grow the programme in line with the ambitions of the patient support team.

Activities

The successful applicant will:

  • Research, prepare and submit inspiring funding approaches to charitable Trusts and Foundations working in conjunction with colleagues across the organisation
  • Develop and maintain strong, long-term relationships with current and prospective donors and partners. Develop a portfolio of Trusts and Foundations and their key contacts. Represent the Trust externally to inspire support for our aims and activities.
  • Manage your portfolio of Trusts to ensure that all activity and reports are delivered and their expectations are exceeded – working with colleagues across the Trust.
  • Creatively research and identify activities within the Trust that will appeal to Charitable Trusts; proactively identifying new and innovative funding sources.
  • Keep clear and up to date records, complying with brainstrust data protection policies and procedures.
  • Support other fundraisers with regional grant activity

Profile

You will be an experienced grants and trusts fundraiser, looking forward to the prospect of working with brainstrust’s leadership team. Of course you won’t have got to where you have today without being very well organised and self-starting. Perhaps most important of all will be the fact that you are a commercially astute, creative and agile thinker.

Your communication skills will be stellar, particularly your ability to turn ideas into compelling written proposals. You will be used to working in a project environment with a team.
