Do you want to be part of a dynamic and creative team? Do you want to play a key role in a new ambitious fundraising and volunteering campaign?

The University of Birmingham is ranked amongst the world’s top 100 institutions, its work brings people from across the world to Birmingham, including researchers and teachers and more than 5,000 international students from over 150 countries.  The University is renowned for its research excellence and its researchers have received 11 Nobel Prizes. From pioneering organ transplants, discovering gravitational waves and furthering understanding of Shakespeare, to developing cures for cancer, advances in robotics and revealing the structure of DNA, the University has been at the forefront of some of the most ground-breaking discoveries of the last 100 years.

Our student body is one of the largest and most diverse in the UK. Our students come from nearly 150 countries and our flagship outreach programmes mean that almost 25% of our student population come from disadvantaged backgrounds, one of the highest proportions in the UK. All students are members of the Guild of Students, their students’ union, which supports them to develop skills outside of study, have fun and make sure their time at Birmingham is special. The Guild of Students, which was awarded NUS Students’ Union of the year in 2018, is home to over 300 student groups, so wherever our students passions lie, there is something for them.

Development and Alumni Relations

The Development and Alumni Relations Office (DARO) exists to support this academic and student community by engaging, inspiring, and celebrating alumni, individuals, and charitable funders who give their money, time, and networks to support the University’s strategic priorities.  The Office, which is comprised of 60 staff across five teams, is focused on fundraising and volunteering from alumni and individuals who are passionate about changing lives, through funding various research trials, supporting student bursaries, mentoring students, and providing internships.

This autumn, we will launch the University’s next fundraising and volunteering campaign which will help to tackle challenges that will impact our generation and the next. We will do this by bringing together staff, students, alumni and supporters to support the campaign by volunteering their time, donating to research projects and spreading the word.

The role

The Student Engagement Officer post is funded by a generous gift from Lloyds Banking Group to support the delivery of the Lloyds Scholars programme. This scheme enables approximately 15 scholars per year to study at the University, and this role is critical to the success of the programme and Birmingham is often highlighted as a stand out example amongst the 9 partner universities. The post holder will provide the Scholars with a comprehensive induction, support to complete their required 100 hours of volunteering and to participate in summer internships. The post is part of the Student Engagement team, and will also lead on several aspects of the broader student engagement programme within DARO such as Welcome Week activity, the distribution of the Alumni Impact Fund and support around graduations.

Students are an important audience in our next campaign, and we work closely with The Guild of Students to deliver key elements of our programme. This post will be based in the Guild of Students up to two days a week, working with student groups to identify ways in which they can both benefit and be involved in the campaign.
