Role Profile

We have a new role at ZSL to create, manage and develop the relationships with trusts and foundations. The successful candidate for our Head of Trusts, Foundations and Major Projects Fundraising role will raise significant funds for the ZSL’s Capital Masterplan and cross-society priorities by building relevant and successful cases for support that can be used across the whole of the fundraising directorate.  

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To lead and manage the team to maximise income from Trusts and Foundations.
  • To create, manage and develop the relationships with trusts and foundations in the UK
  • Responsible for project managing the fundraising for ZSL’s priorities and ensuring all key project stages are delivered in the approaches to Trusts and Foundations.
  • Develop a fundraising strategy, focusing on the UK Trusts and Foundations that are aligned with ZSL’s cross-Society priorities and capital requirements.
  • Ensure that an achievable capital appeal plan is researched, planned and delivered.
  • Supporting the process to identify Trusts and Foundations that are aligned to departmental fundraising priorities and ensure that the capital projects are matched to the appropriate fundraising stream.
  • Ensuring a consistency in voice with proposal writing to Trusts and Foundations
  • Work with colleagues across various ZSL departments to develop strong, costed applications to Trusts and Foundations that fit well with the stated giving criteria for prospective new, existing and lapsed funders.
  • Work with the Fundraising Director to implement the fundraising processes for ZSL and co-ordinate fundraising activity across the Society ensuring a donor-led approach
  • Work with the Development Strategy Board to create effective networks and help set their cultivation strategies with Trusts and Foundations.
  • Ensure that appropriate reporting schedules to Trusts and Foundations are implemented.

Person Specification

  • Extensive experience in fundraising with a proven track record of success of building, developing and maintaining strong relationships and raising significant funds from Trusts and Foundations
  • Have an in-depth understanding of key issues relevant to biodiversity conservation
  • Good working knowledge of large-scale philanthropic foundations
  • Excellent written and spoken English and strong organisational, interpersonal and presentation skills;
