Southbank Centre is the UK’s largest arts centre and one of the UK's top five visitor attractions, occupying a 17 acre site that sits in the midst of London’s most vibrant cultural quarter on the South Bank of the Thames. We exist to present great cultural experiences that bring people together and we achieve this by providing the space for artists to create and present their best work and by creating a place where as many people as possible can come together to experience bold, unusual and eye-opening work. The site has an extraordinary creative and architectural history stretching back to the 1951 Festival of Britain. Southbank Centre is made up of the Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and Hayward Gallery as well as being home to the National Poetry Library and the Arts Council Collection. It is also home to four Resident Orchestras (London Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, London Sinfonietta and Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment) and four Associate Orchestras (Aurora Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, Chineke! Orchestra and National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain).

We are currently looking for a Senior Trusts and Foundations Manager to support the Head of Philanthropy in identifying the biggest opportunities, and manage a team to maximise income from trusts, foundations and public funders from around the world for capital and revenue projects. The post holder will take the lead on extending the prospect pool and will build excellent relationships, both personally with key contacts in the trust. In addition, you will also identify key decision-makers to connect with senior Southbank Centre staff to better understand the opportunity and to enhance chances of successful long term partnerships. You will create high quality persuasive applications for a range of Southbank Centre revenue and capital projects, ensure excellent stewardship of grants and trusts funders and provide comprehensive monitoring, evaluation and reporting for capital, project and revenue grants.

With significant experience of fundraising from trusts and foundations ideally in the arts or education sector, you will have a proven track record of income generation against targets and managerial experience.  The ideal candidate will have excellent written communication skills with the ability to frame a persuasive case for support for a project. You will also have the ability to assemble budgets for fundraising applications and the ability to work independently on projects and take the initiative to secure new funding. With a keen interest in, and knowledge of, a range of different art forms you will be ready to use your existing skills and experience to support fundraising within the Development team and contribute towards Southbank Centre fulfilling our mission to make the arts available to all.

Job Objectives

  • To support the Head of Philanthropy in identifying the biggest opportunities and maximising income from trusts, foundations and public funders from around the world for capital and revenue projects.

  • To line-manage the Trusts and Foundations Executive, and support them in directing the Trusts and Foundations Officer.

  • To create high quality persuasive applications for a range of Southbank Centre revenue and capital projects.

  • To ensure excellent stewardship of trusts and foundations funders and to provide comprehensive monitoring, evaluation and reporting for capital, project and revenue grants.

Main Responsibilities

  • Together with the Head of Philanthropy co-create a strategy to grow income from trusts, foundations and other public funders for revenue projects and to lead on the delivery of the agreed strategy

  • Identify, prepare cultivation plans and lead on relationships with key strategic funders with a view to securing multi year gifts

  • Take responsibility for researching and writing a wide range of excellent capital and revenue applications and work together with Head of Philanthropy and Director of Development in creating persuasive proposals for major projects.

  • Build good relationships, both personally with key contacts in the trust, and identify key decision-makers to connect with senior Southbank Centre staff to better understand the opportunity and enhance chances of successful long term partnerships

  • To supervise monitoring, evaluation and reporting requirements for a range of capital, project and revenue grants and ensure that appropriate reports are submitted to funders according to their deadlines.

  • To provide excellent stewardship and communication with grant-giving funders ensuring that their support is acknowledged with agreed benefits and policies.

  • To line manage the , Trusts and Foundations Executive, ensuring appropriate support, development and training to enable them to achieve their full potential in accordance with department strategy.

  • Create and maintain a prospect list for revenue fundraising, ensuring that the fundraising database is kept accurate and up to date in relation to these prospects.

  • To work with the Head of Philanthropy and wider Philanthropy Team to create a strong case for support and to identify the biggest opportunities within Southbank Centre’s artistic programme

  • To build strong relationships across the artistic and operational teams at Southbank Centre to create proposals and budgets for capital and revenue applications.

  • To stay informed of developments in fundraising from trusts and foundations and public bodies and monitor the progress of other arts and cultural organisations.

  • To represent Southbank Centre as required at a range of external meetings and events.

  • To undertake any other duties as may be reasonably required in the post.

Person Specification

Essential skills and experience required

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has significant experience  of fundraising from trusts and foundations ideally in the arts or education sector.

  • Has a demonstrable interest in the arts / cultural sector.

  • Has line-management experience.

  • Has a proven track record of income generation against targets.

  • Has excellent written communication skills with the ability to frame a persuasive case for support for a project.

  • Has first class research and analytical skills including the ability to understand complex financial information.

  • Has good listening skills and the capacity to understand and accurately record the content of artistic meetings.

  • Has the ability to assemble budgets for fundraising applications.

  • Works with a focused and methodical approach, with the ability to pay attention to detail.

  • Has good IT skills including sound working knowledge of a fundraising database and all MS Office packages.

  • Has the ability to work independently on projects and take the initiative to secure new funding.

  • Is able to work effectively with and support a wider team.

  • Has the ability to deal tactfully and diplomatically with a wide range of people across Southbank Centre, including Board members, donors, sponsors and senior staff.

  • Is able to demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to the role that diversity and inclusion play in the activities of the Southbank Centre as a whole and in the work of this particular job.
