The Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF) is a charity that invests in developing today’s most promising young African scientists, supporting them to become significant contributing leaders in global health research.

Working closely with an extensive network of North – South key partners and donors, AREF provides funding and programme support that nurtures and enables promising African researchers. AREF’s support enables talented scientists to access, compete and fully utilise local and international research funding opportunities in order to tackle Africa’s most significant health and developmental issues.

Having successfully established itself as a leading, innovative and impactful supporter of African science and health research leadership, AREF is now embarking on a new phase of programme enhancement, development and delivery. This next phase of development is vital given the growing science and research challenges the world now faces.

About the Role

We are now looking for a head of fundraising to join our team, and to be responsible for leading and managing our fundraising strategy.  We seek someone that is skilled, knowledgeable and experienced in fundraising from major donors, philanthropists, corporates, trusts and foundations and grant-making bodies.

Working closely with the AREF Director you will be located in the UK and will travel as required to raise funds.  You will also work with colleagues to link up with partners in Europe, USA, Africa and other parts of the world. 

Strategy and Planning

  • Identify and research prospects
  • Prepare bespoke cultivation plans and compelling cases for support for each prospect
  • Refresh our fundraising strategy to maximise income and meet the immediate and longer-term needs of the charity
  • Identify and develop systems s to support the growth of fundraising income across the charity

Major Donors, Philanthropists, Corporates and Trusts & Foundations

You will work with the AREF director to:

  • Identify and develop opportunities to generate and/or increase income from Major Donors, Philanthropists, Corporates and Trusts & Foundations, ensuring excellent relationship management throughout
  • Produce, submit and manage all applications, written approaches and communications with prospects and funders
  • Follow up all initial negotiations to ensure all relevant parties involved are in full agreement and due diligence processes have been applied

What you will bring

  • Substantial experience working in a senior charity fundraising position
  • Track record of securing five- and six-figure donations
  • Significant experience of Trusts & Foundations and Major Donor fundraising
  • Experience of fundraising for health research or international development
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Outstanding skills in relationship-building with prospects, donors, trustees and colleagues
  • Strong organisational, analytical and budgetary management skills

What AREF Will Offer You

  • A salary in the range of £48,000 – £52,000 (pro rata), dependent on experience.
  • Generous pension contribution, with no qualifying period.
  • 30 days annual leave each year, plus public holidays.
  • 36 hour working week, usually worked over 5 days (hours from 0.6-1.0 FTE considered).
