Foundation Officer (Events & Communications) 

Founded in 1611, Charterhouse is one of the great historic public schools of England. With four centuries of history behind it, the School is committed to being at the forefront of educational progress in the twenty first century. Originally founded at Sutton’s Hospital in London, the School moved to its present magnificent 250-acre site near Godalming in Surrey in 1872. Today, we have over 820 pupils aged 13 to 18, most of whom are boarders, except for around 30 who are day pupils. Over 70 girls and around 30 boys are admitted to the Sixth Form each year. 

This is an exciting time to be joining Charterhouse. The School has recently announced its plans to move to full coeducation from the age of 13. We look forward to welcoming our first girls into Year 9 in September 2021. There will be girls in every year group from September 2023. Alongside coeducation, we are working on an ambitious development plan which will place Charterhouse as the leading coeducational School in the country.

Position: Foundation Officer 
Location: Godalming, Surrey 
Job type: Full Time, Permanent 
Hours: 37.5 hours per week, 0900 - 1730, Monday to Friday, with an hour unpaid for lunch 
Salary: £21,000 to £24,000 depending on the qualifications, skills and experience of the successful candidate

About the role: 

The post of Foundation Officer will work closely with the Foundation Director and Foundation Managers to implement an enhanced programme of communications and events, which focus on bringing the Charterhouse community together. 


- Implement the School’s OC and Parent Relations strategy in conjunction with the Foundation Director, and Foundation Managers. 
- Develop and manage a high quality programme of School events for OCs, parents and others which provide meaningful opportunities to become involved in, and make a significant contribution to, supporting the School’s aims, such as: Carthusian Day; Guest lectures / talks, networking evenings. 
- Ensuring parents and OCs are invited to events taking place across the School calendar, such as: Pupil plays, Music recitals, sports fixtures, Carthusian Day etc. 
- Supporting the OC Club societies and House Associations, all of which are run by alumni volunteer committees. 
- Delivering a regular programme of gaudies and OC reunions. 
- Delivering a programme of activities for both new and existing parents each year, supporting individual housemasters (as required) to deliver a programme of house-based events for current parents. 
- OC and parent events and activities in Hong Kong and other international chapters. 
- Donor and prospective donor events. 
- Other events and activities which promote positive relationships with OCs, current and past parents and others. 
- Being a lead point of contact via email and phone for alumni and parents, OC Clubs and Societies, and old House Associations. 
- Coordinating the sending of mass email communications which share news and invite to events. 
- Contribute to a suite of hard copy School publications and electronic communications for OCs and parents. 
- Sharing editorial responsibility for School publication The Greyhound which reports annually on OC and School news and interest stories. 
- Play a proactive active role in facilitating the activities of our OC and Parent Boards in Hong Kong, the USA, and elsewhere around the globe. 
- Support the creation of a careers network for OCs, current pupils and parents, along with the Foundation Manager and the Careers and Higher Education Office. 
- Building upon the School’s social media presence in conjunction with colleagues In Marketing and the common room (Brooke Hall). 
- Working with colleagues to communicate positive messages about the importance of philanthropic support for the School. 
- Working with the Foundation Officer (Database) to ensure that all necessary information is recorded as accurately as possible. 
- Undertaking such other activities as may be reasonably expected. 
- Working in accordance with the Data Protection Act and other relevant legislation. 
- Responsibilities may evolve as OC and parent relations and fundraising activities develop. 

Essential Criteria: 

- Educated to degree level or equivalent. 
- Experience of managing and inspiring volunteers to support institutional aims. 
- Demonstrable experience events management and of establishing and delivering high-quality complex events. 
- Delivery of mass-communications programmes, including emails to stakeholders. 
- Experience implementing social media strategies. 
- Outstanding written and oral communication skills. 
- Excellent telephone manner. 
- Outstanding interpersonal skills: with the proven ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with a wide range of people. 
- Co-ordination of events programmes. 
- Delivering multiple projects at once. 
- Ability to work independently or as part of team. 
- Ability to prioritise and meet deadlines under pressure. 
- Unflinching commitment to accuracy and attention to detail. 
- Must be organized and have good time management. 
- Be a quick learner with a flexible approach to the changing nature of their role. 

Desirable Criteria: 

- Management of an online community / careers programme. 
- Previous experience working in the education / charity sector. 
- Sound knowledge and application of the Data Protection Act. 
- Experience in proof reading and writing articles and marketing materials. 
- Editorial skills.
