About the role

We are looking for an experienced, dynamic and ambitious high value fundraiser to work as a Senior Partnerships & Philanthropy Officer.  The post-holder will play a key role in our fast-growing and high performing Partnerships and Philanthropy Unit.

The Partnerships & Philanthropy Team has seen significant growth over the last few years, built around strong partnerships with major funders.  We have ambitions to increase income to £9m+ a year.

The Senior Partnerships & Philanthropy Officer will play a vital role in supporting this ambition, and in helping Practical Action achieve its wider goals. You will have a strong aptitude and proven success in winning new business and subsequently developing and managing a portfolio of donors and prospects capable of making five, six and, potentially, seven figure grants.  These donors and prospects are sophisticated grant-makers and major donors, drawn from the UK, Europe and the US, giving large, multi-year grants to complex projects and campaigns.

Critical to the success of the role will be the ability to identify, research, engage, communicate, build relationships and win support from donors and prospects. The role will also require you to engage, communicate and work with colleagues across the organisation to secure new donors. You will need to quickly understand often complex projects and strategies and engage and communicate about these with donors.  You will also need to work collaboratively with colleagues and donors to negotiate and develop proposals and steward supporters.

The role offers an amazing opportunity for an ambitious fundraiser who is seeking a challenging but, ultimately, incredibly rewarding role.

About you

You have a solid understanding of high value fundraising (trusts and foundations and major donors), and you have most likely had at least 3-4 years winning new business and managing and developing a portfolio of high value donors.  Ideally you will have some experience of international development and/or some experience of European or US funders.

You are confident at identifying and seizing opportunities, quickly building relationships and securing support.  You are a confident communicator with the ability to work with a range of people to help secure grants and manage donor relationships, ideally on complex projects.

You are great at organising yourself and you are a confident problem solver.  And whilst you will need to be passionate for the cause, you will also need to be a calm head when things don’t go right.

Why join us?

The opportunity to work for an organisation that is making a positive difference to the lives of people worldwide, a friendly and supportive culture, working with values driven and highly engaged colleagues, work life balance and flexible working – these are just some of the reasons we think Practical Action is a great place to work.

Our new open plan offices are located in the centre of Rugby near to the train station but we also offer free parking.

In addition, we offer the following benefits:

  • Flexible working/hours – full time roles are contracted at 35 hours per week.
  • Most staff in the UK are currently working from home due to coronavirus and we expect to it be this way for some time. It is however our practice normally that we operate an agile flexible working policy, where flexible working hours are enabled as well as remote working (between 2-3 days per week depending on the  role).
  • 26 days holiday in addition to public holidays.
  • Pension scheme - employer contributes 10.5% of salary and the employee contributes 5%.
  • Life assurance (3 x annual salary).
  • Bike to Work scheme.

About us

We are an international development organisation putting ingenious ideas to work so people in poverty can change their world.

We help people find solutions to some of the world’s toughest problems. Challenges made worse by catastrophic climate change and persistent gender inequality. We work with communities to develop ingenious, lasting and locally owned solutions for agriculture, water and waste management, climate resilience and clean energy. And we share what works with others, so answers that start small can grow big.

We’re a global change-making group. The group consists of a UK registered charity with community projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America, an independent development publishing company and a technical consulting service. We combine these specialisms to multiply our impact and help shape a world that works better for everyone.
